Brooklyn’s Wilder Maker has just released two of their latest singles, “Static” (ft. VV Lightbody) and “Against Numbers” (ft. Katie Von Schleicher). The group is also preparing the release of its latest album Male models on July 29, the album tells stories of unrequited love, drunkenness and despair, and more.
After the previous singles “A Professional” and “Letter of Apology”, “Static” is the third track from their upcoming album. According to Gabriel Birnbaum, “It touches on how violence in our culture tends to simmer below the surface in subtle ways that we ignore until it explodes into something truly horrifying. It’s loosely inspired by a friend I had who used to get drunk and goad people into fights he wanted to lose. It features my friend VV Lightbody on vocals, an amazing singer and multi-instrumentalist from Chicago whose solo work I’m a big fan of.
We all listen to a lot of playlists, even us album buffs. I kept an ever-expanding playlist of songs I never want to skip, with all these different voices back to back. I wanted to make a record that sounds like a playlist that way; it became a kind of writing challenge for me.
Male models can be described as Birnbaum’s stories of unrequited love, drunkenness and despair. The album feels almost voyeuristic, like you’re sitting in a crowded cocktail bar, peeking at nearby tables.
Wilder Maker features a dynamic roster of musicians that includes singer-songwriter Gabriel Birnbaum, Nick Jost and Sean Mullins as the lead trio. Male models also features guest voice spots from Adam Duritz (of Counting Crows), Katie Von Schleicher, Felicia Douglass (Dirty Projectors, Ava Luna), Alex Schaaf (Yellow Ostrich), VV Lightbody and Mutual Benefit.
Male models manages to really capture the energy of a crowded party and its accompanying playlist. Musically, it also constantly changes form. The album has an electrified soul, with heartfelt folksongs, indie rock and searing barn burners, all of which are deftly tied together by Birnbaum’s sardonic, catastrophic storytelling.
