Vicksburg gears up for its first arts and music festival

Vicksburg, Miss. (WLBT) – The City of Vicksburg sends a big thank you to residents and visitors tomorrow with a music and arts festival.

Preparations are underway for the first outdoor festival. The street in front of the Vicksburg Convention Center will be blocked off Saturday for a free event that celebrates the city.

“We thought it was time to come together and show our appreciation to the citizens of Vicksburg and surrounding areas,” Mayor George Flaggs said.

Vicksburg’s senior administrator said the city wanted to show gratitude for how it successfully handled COVID and bounced back. Vicksburg’s premier arts and music festival will feature live music, food and artists displaying their work.

Inside the convention center on Friday, vendors set up shop in the pop-up shop to offer their wares. Artist and Vicksburg native Tony Davenport painted the flyer for the event and coordinated the artist’s exhibit.

“Tony himself will take the stage at 2:30 p.m. to paint live in front of a music-savvy audience,” said Vicksburg Convention Center General Manager Erin Southard. “We look forward to a fun day and night of music, celebration, food, libations.”

This event will also mark Vicksburg’s post-pandemic comeback.

“Our sales tax has increased by 17%. Our gambling tax has gone up 14% and continues to go up because people know they can feel safe in Vicksburg, and it’s a great environment for families and friends,” added Flaggs.

The Vicksburg Arts and Music Festival takes place on Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. A coach will provide free rides to pick up attendees by parking in the garage and on nearby streets.
