International dancehall star Shenseea has become the first Jamaican female artist to be nominated for an MTV Video Music Award.
Shenseea is nominated for PUSH Performance of the Year (Best New Artist) for her performance of her single “RU That”, which features American rapper 21 Savage, which premiered on MTV in March 2022.
“First VMA nomination for me AND Jamaica🇯🇲. Hit the link and vote everyday💕,” Shenseea wrote in a post.
The MTV PUSH platform spotlights top artists and features exclusive performances, interviews and personalized content.
The only other Jamaican artist to be nominated for an MTV VMA Award is Sean Paul.
“RU That” is just one of the singles from Shenseea’s debut album, ALPHA, which was released in March and debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Reggae Chart.
Since stepping into the limelight in 2015, Shenseea has enjoyed a rapid rise to fame and is now one of the leading ladies of dancehall, with a massive international following and collaborations with a wide range of artists from different genres such as Megan Thee Stallion, Young Thug, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Tarrus Riley, Kanye West among others.
The “Lighter” hitmaker also won Best Reggae Act at the UK-based Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards 2021, among other major accolades.
