Heavy metal is officially the fastest growing music genre in the world

Heavy metal has been officially recognized as the fastest growing music genre in the world, according to a new report from music distributors TuneCore.

It’s no secret that heavy metal is an incredibly popular musical genre. After all, we’ve not only seen scientific studies confirm that metalheads are “nice people,” but we’ve seen Montreal crowned “heavy metal city,” and we’ve also seen David Hasselhoff turn to the genre for his next album.

Needless to say, it’s no surprise to learn just how popular the genre is.

However, according to a new report from TuneCore, it seems that not only is heavy metal a popular style, but also more popular genre among streaming services, making it the fastest growing music genre in the world.

TuneCore, which enables musicians to distribute their music through streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and more, recently released its first quarter report, revealing that 2018 streaming and download numbers increased by 83% compared to 2017, bringing their total to 199.3 billion.

“TuneCore is the only global platform that pays artists 100% of what they earn from digital streams and downloads, while meeting all of their distribution, promotion and publishing administration needs” , explained TuneCore CEO Scott Ackerman.

“In 2019, we are seeing great momentum to help our clients build lasting careers by finding new revenue across formats and channels.”

Close behind however, J-Pop saw a 133% increase, while genres like R&B/Soul and K-Pop follow at 68 and 58%, respectively.

While it’s unclear at this point if this trend will continue into the future (especially given K-Pop’s apparent global dominance), it’s hardly a surprise to heavy metal fans, who no doubt have their horns at this news.
