Another successful year for the Great American Irish Festival! Other than an absolute downpour that canceled the Elders show on Saturday night, the weekend was a total success! A plethora of great bands!

My videos aren’t the greatest quality, but the hope/intention was to get a “feel” of the weekend!

The Great American Irish Festival is coming up July 25 through the 27th. This is a terrific festival held just west of Utica, NY, in the town of Frankfort.

This will only be its 5th year, and for such a rural area, it’s incredible the amount of people that attend, however one look at their line up will tell you why! This festival is all about the music, with 3 stages going non-stop for 3 days! There’s also a 5K Run on Saturday and Gaelic Football.

The first festival was held in 2004, and was only a one-day event, but despite the rain, drew 6,000 people! The following year it was changed to a 3 day event, and last years gate was 40,000 over 3 days!

If all goes well, in the weeks following the festival, I am hoping to post some picutres from the weekend. Pictures would be posted on this site, and/or on CMN’s myspace:

Three new bands added to CMN’s library!

The Prelude, The Prodigals & The Dustmen

The Prelude

This band came all the way from Liverpool to play a festival in Toronto, and fortunately for the people of Buffalo, NY they took a quick trip over the border and performed 2 awesome sets at the Shannon Pub!

This band is FABULOUS! 6 young men, originally from Derry, Ireland, now based out of the UK. Nice personable guys who said they were trying to beat their jet lag with drinking! I tried to manipulate myself a ride with them to Toronto for the next day’s festival, but unfortunately for me, they were going to be flying home out of Toronto, so there went the return ride home!

Their sound had a “Beatles” influence; with a hard edge, yet also with a rolling beat, that keeps me from sitting still while their tunes are playing (live or otherwise!) There’s also a country influence in their music, and almost Johnny Cash(esq) style, but still with that fantastic rolling beat! Loved all of their music, from their ballads, to their harder edge songs! Hopefully they’ll come back to the States soon!

The Prodigals

I’ve seen this band 4 times now! Two of those times being out of town! Great band, great energy! Based out of New York City, lead singer & founding member, Gregory Grene often comes out amongst the crowd pumping his fist in the air singing, or to just stand with the crowd to fully appreciate a solo by bassist extrodinaire Ed Kollar.

At this particular show, after it ended and the crowd thinned a bit, the band sat at the bar with us and had a drink or two, then their newest member, Dave Fahy, out of Galway, broke out his guitar and played song after song, with Gregory (and the rest of us) singing along! Ed, the bassist, even played a couple of tunes on Dave’s guitar, one of which being from Tenacious D! What a riot! The Prodigals are a rollicking good time!

The Dustmen

I am actually embarrassed to admit that I’ve never seen this band live! In one week’s time, I saw a band from Dublin, Liverpool, and Manhattan, while missing this local band completely! Their CD sounds great though! Enjoy!

Celtic Music News has just added Scythian to it’s library!

Had the pleasure of seeing Scythian live on 5/23/08 and as usual they put on a stellar performance! This band is out of Washington DC and is being booked at major festivals and drawing huge crowds of people. They are real crowd pleasers and play a large selection of Celtic, Gypsy & Ukranian tunes.

In 2008 this band will have played for Presidents, Prime Ministers & the Pope! On this past St. Patricks day they played for the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Ireland. They’ve also just been invited to play for the Pope during “World Youth Days” in Sydney, Australia in July 2008.

Another band not to be missed! Check them out on an upcoming podcast!

Aaron has been receiving all kinds of new music to play on future podcasts! Here are the latest bands that will be featured on upcoming podcasts.

Barleyjuice, Celtic Cross, Wild Celts, Pat Chessel & Emish

I was very fortunate to catch Emish in concert last weekend! They are fantastic! A lot of their music has a wonderful blend of flute and fiddle, coupled with the distinctive, punk rock(ish) voice of lead singer Bobbie Currier! A band not to be missed!

I’ve also had the pleasure of seeing Barleyjuice last summer. These guys are some of the coolest, nicest group of men you’ll meet! Their shows are a guaranteed good time!

Greenwich Meantime released their 2^nd cd titled Proof, and two of their founding members have left the band. Bassist Nigel Bazinet moved to western Canada, and Fiddler/Vocalist Shelley Downing grew weary of road life and wanted to spend more time at home. Glenn Forrester, the bands sound engineer & tour manager, replaced Nigel at Bass, and Kelsey McDonell replaced Shelley.

Enter the Haggis, The Elders, and their combined fans toured Ireland together! Barleyjuice released their 4^th album, titled Bonnie Prince Barley.

Scythian, a band out of Washington D.C. exploded upon the Irish Festival circuit! Their high-energy, adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of music has one goal in mind – to get people on their feet and dancing, and they’re being booked at every major festival across the country!

And finally, sadly it was announced that the Jackfrost Festival in the Pocono’s has been cancelled for 2008. Hmm, coincidentally my friends and I traveled to that festival for the first time last May! I didn’t think we caused that much damage! Then again, maybe it was that crazy orange pylon dance my friend Carrie performed during a “dance-off” with the Celtic band Searson! Hopefully the festival will be back in 2009.

Yup, I know, I know. Still just more progress. And you dont even get to see it all. A lot of background things are happening, we are trying to figure out what is the best war for us to exchange info internally. A lot of work has gone into that, bit still not happy with any of the solutions yet.

We are also looking into other ways of doing things, more info on that soon, testing some pieces out now. Also playing with ways that my super sexy iPhone can do more on the site so I am not stuck at the comp so much.

If anyone has ideas, feel free to send them in.

When i switched the site from Radio Userland to WordPress I did not get all of the old shows transferred to this site. I am in the process of doing that now. There were 40 or so missing maybe a bit more, I have added almost 10 of them so far and I will continue to add them until all are up. This is step one before getting back up and running.

I’m getting there, A bunch more are now added.� Keep checking back.

A huge apology to everyone, I know that the show has been off for a LONG time, almost a year. I basically burned out, was sick for a couple of weeks then could just not get up the desire to work on it. I didnt check my email for months (took forever to wade through them all). Celtic World Fusion group BAD HAGGIS sweeps international music awards

BAD HAGGIS cleaned-up at the international music awards last night at The Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana, CA.� The show, put on by the international music community, Just Plain Folks (www.jpfolks.com), represented artists from 100 countries, with 70 countries receiving nominations for submissions of over 350,000 songs, 25,500 albums, 1,000 videos and more than 500 song lyrics. Preliminary judging has taken a full year.� A panel of 8000 judges reviewed the entries without knowing the names of the artists of more than 80 genres/categories from A Capella, Classical, Children�s, Celtic, and Gospel to Hip Hop, Rock, Heavy Metal, Industrial, R&B, Blues and many more.

BAD HAGGIS, relatively unknown to most of the audience, opened the 5 � hour show with a theme from the film, BRAVEHEART, segueing straight into their signature song from the TRIP CD, �Bad Haggis�.� Their performance tore the roof off and set a high standard for the rest of the 25 musical acts of the evening.� The night only got better!� Here�s a summary of the awards:

Young Folk Awards 2006

Hey all.
It seems there are too few awards and events that soley to recognize Celtic genres of music, so when one does come up, I like to give it as much attention as I can. Recently in the BBC were the Young Folk awards.

This particular award recognizes the future makers of what we all enjoy, traditional and acoustic music with roots in any culture. Young’uns from 15-20 can particitpate, and this years winners have been chosen. These are the people to watch in the coming years!

Hey everyone, as you all can see this is the new version of the site….It is still in the process of being put together as you can also see…

I just put show #73 up below, it is the Enter the Haggis interview for those of you coming to check it out.

I am doing some experimenting with how I want the layouts to be. I have redirected the rss feeds to this site already so if you are already subscribed you will stay subscribed. There is still a lot to do, close to the top of the list is some kind of contact form for you to mail me. For now feel free to just post comments. All the old posts will be put in, I didn’t want to put many in until I have decided on how I want them formatted, but they should be coming in a slow relatively steady stream for a while.
